Greenbank F.C. Buccaneers – 17th February

Greenbank Buccaneers v Greenbank Cobras

On a sunny morning at NK there was a return match between the Buccaneers and the Cobras, Buccaneers running out winners when these teams last met…

Buccaneers started well with some good passing bringing Bailey into the game down the right straight away, his run and shot going just wide of the near post. The Buccaneers continued with their good passing and movement with Charlie R coming close after a good through ball from Mason down the centre. Unfortunately Bailey who had been constantly causing them problems down the right suffered a knee injury and had to come off meaning that Jake S came on for his Buccaneers debut in the heart of the defence next to Oli.

The game flowed back and forth with both teams having possession without creating any clear cut opportunities before the Cobras were awarded a free kick that could have gone either way and scored directly from it to take the lead. The Buccaneers didn’t let their heads go down and some good passing and movement between Mason, Jake and Charlie R resulted in Charlie R finishing off the move from Jakes cross to make it all square. Straight away the Buccaneers could have taken the lead but Charlie R’s great turn and shot  went just the wrong side of the post!

The second half started with the Cobras being awarded another free kick which once again could have gone either way and straight from the resulting free kick they took the lead again with the kick looping over the head of Aaron who could do nothing about it. The Buccaneers pushed forward searching for the equaliser with some good runs from Erin creating opportunities for Charlie R and Jake, both of whom saw their efforts go agonisingly wide. Charlie R was then played through by Mason and only a great save from their keeper prevented it from being all square. The Buccaneers kept pressing forward but Cobras playing with 3 at the back were just about able to keep the attacks at bay. With pushing forward so much it left the Buccaneers vulnerable to the counter and only some great tackling and interceptions from Oli and Jake S prevented them from extending their lead.

As the game ran into the final minutes the Buccaneers were throwing everything at it in search of the equaliser with Mason hitting the post with his shot after the ball came out to him after a corner and then almost straight away firing another shot just over from another corner that had been forced after Charlie R had brought out a good save from their keeper.

Despite their best efforts though an equaliser couldn’t be found and the days bragging rights belonged to the Cobras as they held on.

A good match between two evenly matched teams saw the Buccaneers end up on the wrong side of the result. They can count themselves unfortunate that a couple of decisions that on another day might have gone the other way led to 2 free kicks which were scored from. They say these even themselves out over the course of the season so lets hope its our turn next week during the cup games 😊 The team deserve a great deal of credit for playing for the majority of the game with no subs and keeping going even when tiredness started to creep in.

Aaron – solid game in goal, responded well when needed and some good distribution and kicking
