Greenbank F.C. Buccaneers – 18th November

Boston Utd v Greenbank Buccaneers

So it was off to the East again and as is tradition in this part of the world it seems, the cold was there to join us…

Greenbank started well passing the ball from back to front which resulted in Charlie R coming close with a nice effort that went just wide – we didn’t have to wait long for the deadlock to be broken though as Erin launched a long throw forward that Bailey ran onto before applying a nice cool finish. Both teams seemed evenly matched with the game flowing both ways and the Boston keeper making a couple of great stops from Charlie R and Bailey before Boston broke free and equalised from close range after a good pull back from the wing. Within a couple of minutes the game had changed when Boston scored again with a nice effort from outside the area that nobody would have been able to stop! Straight away Greenbank pushed forward with some excellent play between Erin, Jake and Mason which resulted in a good through ball which was unlucky, hitting the post with a great effort! Charlie R was a constant threat down their right hand side, linking well with Erin who defended strongly and was turning defence into attack at every opportunity. The equaliser wasn’t long coming though as a great team goal coming from some lovely passing from defence, through midfield and onto Charlie R who applied a lovely finish that gave their keeper no chance. Straight from the kick off Greenbank should have had another but Mason dispossessed their keeper and shot only for their defender to handle the ball on the line stopping a certain goal. Unfortunately justice wasn’t to be done this time as their keeper got down well to save the resulting penalty kick. Greenbank were starting to get on top with Bailey coming so close after another great through ball by Erin before Charlie R got his second of the game after playing a lovely one two with Bailey. Just before half time Charlie R completed his hattrick with a fantastic volley worthy of any football match!

The second half started with Boston really pushing forward and Greenbank working their socks off to close down and win back possession at every opportunity. Despite the pressure it was Greenbank who came closest to adding another after Charlie F battled to win the ball with their defender and saw his shot go just over with the keeper beaten. Boston finally managed to break down a resilient defensive display at the third attempt as Aaron pulled off two great point blank saves before the ball fell kindly to one of their players who tapped in it. GAME ON…. Dave made a change bringing on some fresh legs and straight away Drew was into the thick of it putting in some good tackles to help keep Boston at bay. Now Boston were really pushing forward and won a succession of corners that had the away support holding their breath and keeping fingers and toes crossed that Greenbank could hold on! With a few minutes to go Erin then showed a lot of bravery and dedication to the cause by getting up and continuing to play on after taking a ball straight in the face on the volley. In the closing minutes it was all Boston as they piled forward looking for another goal to bring it all square but Greenbank responded with a number of last ditch tackles… then with seconds to go Boston were awarded a free kick and the ball looped up and looked like it was dipping in but somehow Aaron managed to tip it over to prevent a goal and maintain the advantage for Greenbank.

If this was on Sky Sports it would have been game of the day! End to end and both teams having periods in the match where the other really had to defend well. Greenbank displaying some of the best periods of play this season with excellent defending, slick passing and movement which was backed up with some sharp shooting. But for their goalkeeper, this would have been a far more comprehensive win as he had an outstanding afternoon making a number of saves.

Player of the match: Erin, great tackling, composed on the ball and really brave – can think of a few grown men who would still be laid on the floor after taking a volley to the face like that! Got up, dusted herself off and put in a fantastic all round display.
