Greenbank F.C. Buccaneers – 3rd March

Greenbank Buccaneers v East Coast

As is becoming customary Greenbank started well passing the ball about well creating an opening for Jake who saw his effort well saved by their goalkeeper. Despite this early pressure it was East Coast who opened the scoring breaking free down the left and cutting back for their striker to tap in from close range. This seemed to spur Greenbank on and a good interchange of passing between Jake, Drew and Mason put Charlie F through who saw his shot blocked by the goalkeeper stopping Jakes follow up too! Greenbank kept up the pressure and Drew found himself in space after good passing between Jake and Mason in the middle but once again his good effort found their goalkeeper in fine form pushing the ball away for a corner. Defensively Greenbank were solid with Oli and Jake S breaking up all the attacks and not giving their strikers any time on the ball.

Charlie F was next to come close, shooting just wide after a good through ball from Jake. Just before half time Mason came close with a shot from the edge of the box from the corner that just skimmed the wrong side of the post!

The second half started with East Coast pushing forward more and Greenbank having to do a bit more defending, but Jake S having a good game stopping anyone from coming through and Oli breaking up the play and turning defence into attack looking very solid at the back. Greenbank came close with Charlie R breaking free and twisting and turning before his low shot was stopped by their keeper who was having the game of his life! Despite this pressure it was East Coast who extended their lead when their striker cut in from the right and his shot from outside the area just looped over Aaron who could do nothing about it. Almost immediately they could have scored again but the ball came back off the bar after a good effort from the left this time. Despite being behind Greenbank didn’t let their heads go down and some great passing and movement between Bailey and Charlie R ended up with Bailey having a good effort which was just wide of the post. From the kick off some good pressing from Charlie R resulted in him getting the ball from their defender and he made no mistake with a great finish to cut the deficit.

Greenbank were pressing looking for the equaliser but the ball broke free and a quick counter attack down the left and pull back gave their striker an easy tap in to extend the lead once again! The game was now end to end with both teams defending well and pushing forward, Erin making some lovely runs down the left, one of them setting up Jake who pulled the ball back to Bailey who made no mistake with the finish to set up a grandstand finish!! Unfortunately though with a minute to go the ball was chipped hopefully into the Greenbank box and despite a bit of a scramble we just couldn’t clear it and their striker followed in to score from close range and give East Coast the win.

On another day this sort of performance would almost certainly have resulted in a Greenbank win – they gave everything from the first minute to the last, never let their heads go down and continued to play a great brand of passing football. However, on another day they wouldn’t have been playing against a keeper who was having the game of their life and was certainly the difference for them today. The team can take so much credit for the way they played and just have to chalk this one down to experience.

Charlie R – a well taken goal created out of nothing and looked very sharp throughout
