Greenbank F.C. Buccaneers – 6th January

Greenbank Buccaneers v Greenbank Cobra’s

First game back after the festivities saw the Buccaneers take on their compatriots the Cobra’s for some interclub bragging rights!

A fairly even start saw both teams looking a little leggy and passes going astray which wasn’t surprising after such a long break away from playing – it was the Buccaneers who carved out the first opportunity with Jake forcing a save from the Cobra keeper and being set up by a run from Bailey down the right. It was first blood to the Cobras though as they split our defence open with some great inter passing and a cool finish after being put through on goal.

The Buccaneers almost hit back straight away with a good effort from Charlie F who shot just wide after being put through by Erin but the equaliser wasn’t far off though as another good move down the right by Bailey saw him pull back to find Charlie F in space who confidently slotted home under the goalkeeper. The Cobras were starting to find their passing and nearly scored again with a good effort which Aaron showed good reactions to stop from close range. A period of pressure followed with the Cobras looking to push forward and only some last ditch tackles from Oli and clearances from Erin and Jake keeping the scores level.

Despite the pressure it was the Buccaneers who regained the advantage with a fantastic breakaway goal where Bailey was put through by Oli and no mistake with a clinical finish to give them the lead at the break.

The second half began with the Cobras pushing forward and Aaron being forced into a great save after they had stolen possession in our box and got a quick fire shot away – they were starting to look the dominant team in a game resembling defence against attack when they got the equaliser after breaking down the right and the pull back into the middle was slotted home leaving Aaron with no chance. The Cobras so nearly took the lead straight after and only a great stop from Aaron, and a little slice of luck saw his save push the ball against both posts before being cleared to safety by Jake.

Bailey then produced the moment of the match picking the ball up on the half way line, beating 3 defenders before smashing his shot into the roof of the net to give the Buccaneers the lead again (this effort reminded me of Hazard’s goal against Arsenal a couple of seasons ago..)

The goal seemed to take the wind out of their sails and straight away Charlie F added to the lead racing on to a long range defence splitting pass from Jake before finishing well – at this point Buccaneers were completely dominant, passing the ball well and regaining possession quickly with Drew pressing the Cobra players every time they got the ball. The Buccaneers further added to their tally when Erin finished really well after a great cross from Charlie F and then almost immediately making a powerful run and shot from the right only being stopped from having another goal by a great save by the Cobra goalkeeper. By this stage Erin was causing them a lot of problems driving forward from deep and creating opportunities which Bailey and Charlie F both came close with. With a couple of minutes to Buccaneers were awarded a penalty but Jake saw his effort just skim the outside of the post and go wide.

In the last minute of the game Cobra’s pulled a goal back with a tap in from close range after a pullback but Buccaneers held on resolutely to prevent any further goal attempts.

Summary

For the second game in a row the Buccaneers faced really good opponents and not only matched, but comprehensively outplayed and outfought them during long periods of the game – after a sluggish beginning they really found their rhythm and ran out deserved winners. Bragging rights for the Buccaneers and the Managers!!
